Algeciras halts trucks to make way for MREs
Faced with the massive arrival of MREs heading to Morocco, the port of Algeciras temporarily suspended the boarding of freight trucks in order to reserve more space for cars on the ferries.
The decision was taken on Saturday, as the Spanish port was expected to handle several thousand vehicles within a few hours. At times, arrivals reached 900 cars per hour, forcing officials to open the waiting areas at Llano Amarillo.

Before noon, around 6,000 vehicles had already entered the port grounds. By 9 p.m., more than 10,800 cars had been recorded in Algeciras, in addition to those that had passed through the nearby port of Tarifa.
To speed up departures to Tanger Med and Sebta, travelers were also authorized to take the first available boat, regardless of the company listed on their ticket.
Goods come after cars
However, this exceptional measure had a direct consequence for freight transport between Spain and Morocco. Heavy trucks had to remain on land while the ferries prioritized evacuating travelers’ cars.

Around 400 trucks had still been able to board the previous day. On Saturday, their passage was suspended for the entire duration of the exceptional measures, causing delays in the shipment of goods, Europa Sur reports.
