Amnesty Report: Moroccan Dockers Elevated to Symbol of Resistance
In its annual report, Amnesty International paints an alarming global picture, denouncing the "cowardice" of leaders in the face of conflicts. The organization nevertheless highlights rare glimmers of hope, driven notably by citizen and union mobilization, particularly in Morocco.
Diplomacy is giving way to war today. This is the bleak assessment delivered Tuesday by Agnès Callamard, Secretary General of Amnesty International. The report points the finger at violence and the domination strategy of state leaders described as "predators," like Donald Trump, Vladimir Putin or Benjamin Netanyahu. Faced with the actions of these leaders, the document condemns a serious failure of the international community. "States, international bodies and civil society must reject the policy of appeasement at any cost," urges the organization.

In the midst of this bleak picture marked by serious abuses, from Burma to Sudan, the NGO shines a light on some strong acts of resistance. It particularly praises the courageous initiatives led by port workers to halt the war effort. The report openly celebrates the actions initiated by dockers in Morocco, Spain and France, whose stated objective was to "disrupt the shipment of weapons to Israel."

This civil and union mobilization occurs in a context of crisis where institutions guaranteeing peace, such as the International Criminal Court, are suffering their worst attacks since 1948. Conflicts in the Middle East illustrate this dangerous slide toward absolute contempt for the law. Noting that violence now replaces dialogue, Agnès Callamard issues a final warning: "We are at the very moment when everything can collapse, when everything built over the last 80 years risks being destroyed."
