Brussels Airport: record traffic for Christmas, Morocco popular
Belgians have a desire to travel elsewhere for the end of the year. Brussels Airport is set to break attendance records for the Christmas holidays, confirming that Morocco remains an essential safe haven for travelers seeking winter sun.
Zaventem is about to experience historic activity. Between this Friday, December 19 and January 4, nearly 1.06 million passengers will transit through the Brussels tarmac, an increase of 3% compared to last year. The big back-and-forth will begin tomorrow with 70,000 travelers expected, but the absolute peak in attendance is expected for Monday, December 29, when 72,000 people will cross paths in the terminals.
While the ski slopes of Innsbruck or Salzburg are full, the main trend remains the flight to the south. The airport confirms that sunny getaways are in high demand, placing Morocco at the top of the favorite destinations alongside the Canary Islands, Egypt and Cape Verde. The Kingdom continues to attract a Belgian clientele eager to trade the grayness of the flat country for the Maghreb sweetness just a few hours’ flight away.
To cope with this record influx, the airport has focused on a festive atmosphere with choirs and decorations, but above all calls for discipline. Passengers are invited to arrive well in advance, to book their parking and to carefully check the rules concerning liquids in the cabin to avoid the start of the holidays turning into an obstacle course.
