Controversy Erupts as Casablanca Officials Consider Converting Historic Church to Mosque
Like Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, who transformed the former Hagia Sophia basilica in Istanbul into a mosque, some PJD members are dreaming of carrying out the same transformation on the Sacré-Coeur church in Casablanca.
The president of the Constitutional Union (UC) group on the Casablanca City Council, Rachid Bouhous, is campaigning for the transformation of the Sacré-Coeur church into a mosque. The idea does not displease the elected members of the Justice and Development Party (PJD).
Built in 1930, the Sacré-Coeur church in Casablanca had been transformed into an annex of the Casablanca Faculty of Law before serving as a meeting and cultural exhibition hall.
For now, the councilors, unanimously, have authorized the continuation of the rehabilitation work on the Sacré-Coeur church entrusted to the local development company, Casa Patrimoine.
