Thanks to particularly heavy winter rainfall, Morocco’s cereal production could double this season. Industry professionals expect the harvest to reach 9 million tonnes, marking a spectacular break from the poor yields recorded the previous year.
Morocco announced on Thursday an emergency fund of 3 billion dirhams (276 million euros) to support the victims of the devastating floods in the northwest of the country , where historic rains have submerged villages and farmland.
Ten new dams with a capacity of 2,300 million m3 will be built in the Sebou river basin by 2050.
By 2025, water scarcity will become pressing, with a reserve of 500 m3 of drinking water, compared to 720 m3 today, and 1700 m3 in the 1970s. This risk of water stress has provoked the reaction of King Mohammed VI who did not fail to express his dissatisfaction during his recent meeting with the members of the Government.
