Eid Al-Fitr: King Mohammed VI pardons more than 1,200 inmates
On the occasion of Eid Al-Fitr, King Mohammed VI has pardoned 1,201 people convicted by Moroccan courts. This act of clemency concerns inmates, individuals at liberty, as well as former repentant extremists.
The celebration marking the end of the month of Ramadan, set for Friday, March 20, 2026 by the Ministry of Endowments, is accompanied by a traditional royal pardon. According to the Ministry of Justice, this decision benefits 1,182 common law convicts, of whom 1,063 are currently serving their sentence.

For these inmates, clemency is mostly reflected in sentence reductions, while a life sentence has been commuted to a fixed-term sentence. Furthermore, 119 individuals at liberty are concerned by partial or total cancellations of their imprisonment or fines.

Finally, this measure extends to a group of 19 people convicted in terrorism cases. They have obtained royal approval after having "officially expressed their attachment to the constants and sanctities of the Nation" and having "revised their ideological orientations and rejected extremism," the statement notes.
