Hollywood Acquires a Moroccan Novel to Tell the Story of a Murder in Casablanca
A Moroccan crime novel is to be adapted for the screen by American, Canadian and Moroccan producers. The Final Bet, by Abdelilah Hamdouchi, will become an international thriller set in Casablanca.
The project brings together Hollywood Ventures Group, Canadian company Big Picture Cinema Group and Moroccan production company Pink Sheep Productions, Variety reveals. Big Picture Cinema will participate in financing and producing the film.
Published in 2001, The Final Bet is the work of Moroccan writer and screenwriter Abdelilah Hamdouchi, considered one of the leading figures in contemporary Arabic crime fiction. The book has also been described as the first Arabic-language crime novel to be translated into English.

The story follows Othman, a young Moroccan man married to Sofia, a wealthy French woman significantly older than him. When she is found murdered in their residence in Aïn Diab, Casablanca, investigators immediately turn their attention to her husband, despite his protests of innocence.
A thriller about police violence and miscarriages of justice
Behind the criminal investigation, the novel examines the transformation of Moroccan justice after the Years of Lead. Abdelilah Hamdouchi contrasts the old police methods, marked by violence and forced confessions, with reforms intended to strengthen suspects’ rights.
The story also addresses corruption, class differences and the risk of an innocent person being convicted because the police favor the most obvious suspect. Casablanca therefore serves as more than just the thriller’s setting: the city and Moroccan society occupy a central place in the plot.
This adaptation stands apart from the many foreign productions that use Morocco to represent other countries. It brings to the screen a Moroccan work, written by a Moroccan author and developed with a local production company, at a time when Moroccan cinema now attracts more spectators than American films in the kingdom’s theaters.

Hollywood Ventures presents The Final Bet as a film noir intended for the international market. The group particularly highlights Casablanca’s visual potential and the universal dimension of a story combining murder, injustice and the struggle against a failing police system.
The project is still in development. No director, actor, budget or shooting schedule has been announced. However, Big Picture Cinema’s arrival among the financiers allows Abdelilah Hamdouchi’s novel adaptation to take another step toward production.
