Like Senegal before the AFCON, Spain is already preparing Morocco’s trial

The Times article claiming that Gianni Infantino allegedly promised Morocco the final in exchange for support for his re-election has provided a new argument to supporters of the Spanish bid.

FIFA has formally denied the existence of such an agreement. The Spanish federation also says it has no information confirming a promise in favor of Casablanca’s future Grand Stade Hassan II.

Nevertheless, Spanish Sports Minister Milagros Tolón says that her country “deserves” to host the final and that it will continue working with FIFA to secure it, Cadena SER reports.

This statement alone does not constitute an accusation against Morocco. But it comes amid a Spanish debate in which relations between Rabat and Infantino are already being used to cast doubt on a possible choice of Casablanca.

Three accusations before the AFCON final

The mechanism recalls the communications adopted by the Senegalese federation two days before the 2025 AFCON final.

In an official statement, it first denounced the lack of adequate security arrangements when its players arrived at Rabat station.

It then refused to train at the Mohammed VI Complex, Morocco’s usual base camp, considering that this situation raised an issue of “sporting fairness.”

The Senegalese federation finally disputed the number of tickets allocated to its supporters as well as the only two VVIP seats made available to it.

CAF responded that Senegal had been able to choose its hotel, that another training ground had been provided to it and that the regulatory ticket quota had been respected, the Senegalese federation’s statement recalls.

The suspicion that Morocco had been favored was thus established even before kick-off. It was subsequently reinforced by the challenge to the refereeing and the Senegalese players’ temporary departure during the final.

Senegal had won the match on the field, but CAF’s appeals jury subsequently declared it forfeited for that abandonment, officially confirming a 3-0 victory for Morocco.

The situation in Spain is not identical. Madrid is denouncing neither its reception conditions nor a sporting inequality that has already been established. But the communication strategy is similar: challenging the impartiality of the framework before the decisive decision is made.

If Spain secures the final, it will be able to present the choice as recognition of its merits. If Casablanca is selected, the narrative of a decision favored by relations between Morocco and Infantino is already ready.
