2030 World Cup: Morocco challenges Spain for the final with its 115,000-seat stadium
Spain is the favorite to host the 2030 World Cup final, but Morocco is playing a trump card to convince FIFA. The Moroccan Football Federation is banking on its future 115,000-seat stadium in Casablanca to snatch the organization of the ultimate match from its Iberian neighbors.
Omar Khyari, vice-president of the Royal Moroccan Football Federation (FRMF), took advantage of a media intervention to defend his country’s candidacy. His central argument is based on the gigantism of the future Casablanca stadium, which is scheduled for delivery in 2028.
With a capacity greater than that of the Santiago Bernabeu, this venue is presented by the official as the "best option" to host the final. This strategy is accompanied by a massive investment in the modernization of infrastructure in Tangier and Rabat, aimed at creating an optimized network of stadiums for the travel and comfort of supporters, according to Ok Diario.
This infrastructural ambition is coupled with a symbolic claim. Morocco wants the African continent to host the World Cup final for the second time in history, fifteen years after the South African edition. Omar Khyari compares this logic to the attribution of the 2016 Olympic Games to Brazil, justified at the time by the need to organize the event in South America for the first time.
The Moroccan file also benefits from a positive sporting momentum, driven by the semi-final reached in Qatar in 2022 and the qualification for the 2026 World Cup. While displaying this determination, the federation official took care to recall the excellence of diplomatic relations with Spain and Portugal, co-organizers of the tournament.
