Money vs Values: What Moroccan Women Really Look for in a Husband
The HCP report on the Moroccan family shows that the choice of spouse is not primarily based on financial situation. For the women surveyed, moral values and sense of responsibility far outweigh economic criteria.
In Morocco, money matters in marriage, but it doesn’t come first when choosing a husband. According to the results of the HCP’s 2025 National Survey on the Family, 55.4% of non-single women cite moral values and responsibility as the top priority when choosing their husband.

This criterion dominates all other responses by a wide margin. Psycho-affective aspects, such as love, understanding, or mutual respect, come far behind at 15.3%. Religiosity accounts for 10.6% of responses, while criteria linked to socioeconomic status, such as income level, job stability, or material situation, are cited first by only 8.3% of women.
The report thus shows that the choice of spouse remains strongly associated with the image of a responsible man, reliable and capable of supporting family life. This result challenges the idea that financial considerations have become the main driver of marriage. They exist, but they do not constitute the first stated criterion.
Differences between urban and rural areas are limited. Moral values and responsibility come first in both settings, with 55.6% in cities and 55.1% in rural areas. Psycho-affective criteria are cited slightly more in urban areas, while religiosity holds a slightly more important place in rural areas.
Education level does reveal some nuances, however. Among women with higher education, psycho-affective criteria carry more weight, while moral values remain dominant. This reflects a gradual shift toward more individualized choices, without diminishing the importance placed on family responsibility.
This hierarchy of criteria occurs in a context where marriage remains hindered by economic difficulties. The same report shows that money, housing, unemployment, and the cost of marriage have become major obstacles for single people hesitant to marry. But when choosing a husband, women place trust, seriousness, and responsibility first.

Behind these figures, the HCP thus draws a more nuanced reality: money can prevent marriage, but it is not enough to define the right spouse. For a large portion of Moroccan women, the expected husband remains above all a man judged to be responsible, stable in his behavior, and bearing values compatible with family life.
