Moroccan Customs Tightens Rules for Expats Lending Foreign-Registered Cars
Very often when they are in Morocco, relatives or friends ask MREs to lend their car registered abroad. Moroccan customs is quite strict about this.
Here is what Moroccan customs says in its latest guide dedicated to MREs.
Specific Conditions and Procedures:
• Required Documents: The vehicle documents, the residence permit abroad, and the rental contract must be provided to carry out the transfer.
• Validity Period: The transfer request must be filed during the validity period of the temporary admission (AT).
• Restrictions on the Assignee: The assignee (the person to whom the vehicle is lent) must not have in his charge a motor vehicle whose situation is not regularized, nor have exhausted his right to the temporary admission regime.
• Residence: The assignor (the person lending the vehicle) and the assignee must reside in the same foreign country.
• Required Presence: The effective presence of the assignor and the assignee is required to carry out the transfer.
Exceptions:
The last two conditions (residence and required presence) are not required in the event of a transfer of temporary admission in favor of the owner of the vehicle.
Transfer of Ownership: The transfer of ownership in favor of persons residing in Morocco is only allowed after payment of the applicable duties and taxes and fines. In addition, the transfer cannot be carried out if the Temporary Admission card is issued under a power of attorney.
