Moroccans in Belgium who receive a disability allowance must be careful before a prolonged stay or permanent departure to Morocco. Belgian rules distinguish between vacations, absences of more than 90 days, and settling abroad.
Leaving for Morocco while receiving a Belgian disability allowance is not always possible under the same conditions. For those concerned, the question depends not only on recognized disability, but also on place of residence, length of stay, and type of allowance received.

Belgium provides several allowances for people with disabilities. The income replacement allowance targets people whose disability significantly reduces earning capacity. The integration allowance concerns people whose autonomy is reduced in daily life. There is also an allowance for elderly care assistance, depending on the Region.
These benefits do not all follow the same rules when a person leaves Belgium. A temporary stay in Morocco does not have the same consequences as a permanent departure. The minister can also authorize a longer stay in exceptional circumstances, for example for serious family, social, or health reasons.
But these exceptions are not automatic. The person concerned must notify the administration or request authorization before departure. They must indicate the dates of stay, location, reason, and provide necessary documentation. A prolonged departure to Morocco without taking action can therefore jeopardize the allowance.
The rule is even stricter in case of permanent settlement in Morocco. If the person is no longer domiciled in Belgium, they can no longer receive the income replacement allowance. This benefit requires being domiciled in Belgium and actually residing there.
For the integration allowance or elderly care assistance allowance, maintenance abroad is possible in certain cases, but conditions are very strict. In particular, you must remain subject to the Belgian health care system and be domiciled in a Member State of the European Union or Switzerland. Morocco does not fall within this framework.
This means that a permanent departure to Morocco can result in the loss of certain allowances, even if the disability remains recognized. Medical recognition alone is not sufficient. The right to payment also depends on residence and administrative conditions.
People receiving a disability allowance must also report significant changes in circumstances: income, address, household composition, health status, housing, family situation, or stay abroad. Failing to transmit information can result in reimbursement or be considered fraud.
For Moroccans in Belgium, the risk often comes from confusion between a temporary stay and a permanent return. Spending a few weeks in Morocco does not have the same consequences as settling there for several months or transferring your main residence there.
Before leaving, it is therefore better to verify the exact type of allowance received, the planned duration of stay, domiciliation in Belgium, and the steps to be taken. An allowance can be maintained during a short stay, but it does not automatically follow a person who leaves to live in Morocco.
