Moroccan Picholine Olive Oil: Healthier and Richer Than Italian Varieties

A study published in Chemistry Africa reveals that the local «Picholine» variety offers superior quality to Italian olives grown in Morocco. Its content of phenolic compounds and oleic acid clearly surpasses that of imported plants.

Moroccan Picholine Olive Oil: Healthier and Richer Than Italian Varieties

Moroccan researchers compared «Picholine» with four Italian varieties — Leccino, Frantoio, Carboncella and Carolea — to assess the impact of the terroir and harvest timing. The results show that, although grown under the same conditions, the foreign varieties struggle to match the chemical profile of the local strain.

The analysis highlights that Italian oils record lower levels of polyphenols, which are essential for the oil’s stability and health benefits. The study also specifies that fruit maturity plays a critical role: phenol concentration peaks midway through the harvest before declining during the final phase.

The interaction between the variety and the local climate remains the decisive factor in final quality. According to the scientists, although crop diversification is a productivity strategy, adaptation to the Moroccan environment clearly favors «Picholine», which retains a richer composition of essential fatty acids.
