Moroccans Abroad Have Ten Times More Impact on the Economy Than the Algerian Diaspora
Personal remittances received from abroad account for 7.5% of Morocco’s GDP, compared with just 0.7% in Algeria. Relative to the size of the two economies, their weight is therefore more than ten times greater in Morocco.
The comparison emerges from the latest World Bank data. For 2025, the institution estimates these remittances at 7.5% of GDP in Morocco and 0.7% in Algeria, a ratio of 10.7.

The gap is all the more pronounced because the Algerian economy is larger in nominal terms: 287 billion dollars in GDP in 2025, compared with 182 billion for Morocco. Funds received from abroad nevertheless occupy a much more important place in the Moroccan economy.
More than 12 billion dollars sent to Morocco
In absolute terms, the gap remains considerable. In 2024, the latest year directly comparable in this series, Morocco received approximately 12.5 billion dollars in personal remittances, compared with 1.8 billion for Algeria, or nearly seven times more.
“Ten times more” does not, however, mean that the Moroccan diaspora is ten times larger, nor that each Moroccan abroad sends ten times more money. The World Bank includes in personal remittances transfers between resident and non-resident households, as well as certain workers’ remuneration.

The comparison therefore concerns their weight in the economy: for the equivalent of 100 dollars of wealth produced, personal remittances received represent 7.50 dollars in Morocco, compared with just 70 cents in Algeria.
