Moroccans Residing Abroad Propel Tangier onto the Podium of Moroccan Airports
Tangier-Ibn Battouta Airport has established itself as one of the main air gateways for Moroccans residing abroad. It now ranks third among the Moroccan airports most used by MREs.
Ibn Battouta Airport ranks third among the Kingdom’s airports receiving the most MREs. Tangier’s rise comes as the airport itself experiences a sharp increase in passenger traffic. More than 1.4 million travelers passed through it during the first half of 2026.

This rise accompanies the development of direct connections with numerous European cities and the importance of summer travel to northern Morocco.
For MREs from Tangier, Tétouan and, more broadly, the northern regions, arriving directly at Ibn Battouta notably avoids having to pass through Casablanca and several additional hours of travel.
The airport also benefits from the expansion of airlines serving Tangier from Europe, particularly during the summer season and Operation Marhaba.
The weight of MREs thus appears greater in Tangier than the national air-traffic ranking alone would suggest.

In terms of total passenger numbers, Casablanca, Marrakech and Agadir remain ahead of Ibn Battouta. But when it comes solely to Moroccans residing abroad, Tangier rises onto the podium.
