Morocco's Air Pollution Plummets 60% as COVID-19 Lockdown Reduces Traffic
With industries at rest, vehicles at a standstill and road users forced to stay at home, air pollution seems to have dropped very sharply.
The air quality department of the National Meteorology Directorate (DMN) stated to H24info "that a decrease in the concentrations of the main pollutants measured has been noticed". It is mainly the pollution related to road traffic that has experienced a reduction rate between 30 and 60%, explains the DMN. These are mainly "nitrogen dioxide (NO2), carbon monoxide (CO) and fine particles with a diameter not exceeding 10µm (PM10)".
As for pollutants resulting from industrial activities such as sulfur dioxide, their concentration has decreased between 10 and 30%. The drop in pollution, according to the same source, is noticeable nationwide, in all air quality monitoring stations in the kingdom.
