Morocco's Avocado Exports Surge 31% as Production Booms
The emergence of avocado production is becoming increasingly remarkable in Morocco. For this season, exports of this highly appreciated fruit internationally are expected to increase by 31%.
"More than 40,000 tons of avocado are produced each year in Morocco, of which about 20,000 tons are exported mainly to European countries," said Ahmed Oukabli, director of the Inter-professional Federation of the Fruit Tree Sector in Morocco (Fedam), to Medias24.
Morocco’s avocado production could reach 80,000 to 100,000 tons, as the Rabat-Salé-Kénitra region is expected to produce 60,000 tons during the 2020/2021 agricultural season. This production suggests a strong increase in exports, due to the growing global demand for this "green gold".
Thus, since "avocado is a highly sought-after fruit," to meet market needs, "several hundred hectares have been planted in recent years. Many farmers will therefore soon come into production. This phase comes 3 to 4 years after planting," Oukabli concluded.
