Morocco Begging Crisis: Government Tackles Child Exploitation
Minister of Solidarity Naima Ben Yahia alerted deputies on Monday about begging. She emphasizes the responsibility of Moroccans, whose compassion fuels this phenomenon, with the most dangerous consequence being violent exploitation of minors.
The generosity of the population toward beggars engages everyone’s responsibility. During her intervention at the Chamber of Representatives, the minister firmly denounced this mechanism that results in a form of direct violence: the use of children on the streets. To track these situations on the ground, the department has acquired 40 mobile units specially assigned to observe and identify begging.

To curb this precariousness, social infrastructure is operating at full capacity. The 63 assistance centers have already taken care of 362,000 individuals, while 89 guidance structures have helped 208,000 beneficiaries. Specific child protection is organized around 56 support spaces that welcomed 36,000 young people, a system complemented by 43 dedicated units that benefited 18,000 people.
