Morocco's Consumer Price Index Rises 0.8% Year-on-Year, Food Costs Drop
The consumer price index (CPI) recorded an increase of 0.8% in August 2021 compared to the same month last year, but stagnant compared to July.
According to the HCP, the CPI remained unchanged compared to the previous month, due to the 0.4% drop in the food products index and the 0.4% increase in the non-food products index.
On an annual basis, the CPI, however, recorded a 0.8% increase in August, as a result of the 2.0% increase in the non-food products index and the 1.0% decrease in the food products index.
For non-food products, the variations range from a 0.4% decrease for "communication" to a 6.1% increase for "Transport".
Under these conditions, the underlying inflation indicator, which excludes volatile price products and public tariff products, recorded an increase of 0.2% in August 2021 compared to July 2021 and 1.7% compared to a year earlier.
The largest increases in the CPI were recorded in Agadir with 1%, in Al-hoceima with 0.9%, in Errachidia with 0.6%, in Marrakech with 0.5% and in Tangier with 0.4%, notes the HCP, noting that on the other hand, decreases were observed in Kenitra with 0.7%, in Rabat and Settat with 0.4% and in Fez and Safi with 0.2%.
