Morocco's Food Prices Rise: Vegetables and Fruits Lead Consumer Cost Increases
In Morocco, consumer prices increased by 0.4%, according to a provisional estimate published by the High Commission for Planning (HCP). Let’s look at the figures in detail for the main cities.
According to the institute, food prices are rebounding slightly by 0.4% compared to the previous month. This variation is the result of a 1.0% increase in the food products index and the stagnation of the non-food products index, explains the same source.
However, the rise in food prices observed between October and November 2019 mainly concerns "vegetables" with 2.2%, "fruits" with 2.0%, "milk, cheese and eggs" with 1.8%, "fish and seafood" with 1.7%, "meats" with 1.2% and "oils and fats" with 0.7%. For non-food products, the decline mainly concerns fuel prices with 1.3%.
It should be noted that the largest increases in the CPI were recorded in Guelmim and Al-Hoceima with 1.2%, in Safi with 0.9%, in Kénitra with 0.8%, in Meknès and Tangier with 0.7%, in Casablanca with 0.6%, in Oujda, Rabat and Béni-Mellal with 0.3% and in Agadir, Fès, Marrakech and Tétouan with 0.2%.
As for the consumer price index, it recorded a 0.4% increase in November 2019, due to a 0.6% increase in the non-food products index and the stagnation of the food products index. For non-food products, the variations range from a 0.3% decrease in "transportation" to a 2.7% increase in "education", it is indicated.
