Morocco's Fruit and Vegetable Exports to Spain Surge, Dominating Non-EU Imports
Moroccan exports of fruits and vegetables to Spain reached 608 million euros in the first nine months of 2021, or a quarter of Spanish imports.
Spanish Customs data show that purchases of fruits and vegetables from Morocco amounted to 608 million euros in the first nine months of 2021, an increase of 2% compared to the same period in 2020. This figure represents more than 25% of total Spanish imports of fruits and vegetables. When taking into account only imports from non-European countries, this share reaches 37.4%.
Spanish imports of fresh fruits and vegetables amounted to 2.4 billion euros at the end of September 2021, an increase of 4% compared to the same period the previous year. Part of this sum (1.62 billion euros) comes from non-European countries, or 67.5% of the total, which "reinforces Morocco as the leading supplier", reports the Spanish weekly specialized in the agri-food sector, Valencia Fruits.
It should also be noted that over the past five years, Spanish imports of fruits and vegetables from Morocco have increased by 38%, from 440 million euros to 608 million euros. In terms of volume imported, the increase is 32% over the same period, from 299,422 tons to 394,922 tons, it is specified.
