Morocco's Prisons Overcrowded: 31% of Inmates Held on Drug-Related Charges
The majority of the 83,346 inmates in Moroccan prisons are there for drug consumption and trafficking offenses. This is according to a report by the General Delegation for Prison Administration and Reintegration (DGAPR).
Until the end of September last year, the number of inmates involved in drug consumption and trafficking offenses stood at 25,591, or 31% of the total prison population, the report states, adding that people convicted in financial cases come in second with 21,206 inmates, or 25% of the total prison population, ahead of those convicted of assaults on individuals, who make up 16% of all inmates, or 13,487 people.
In fourth place are those convicted of attacks on security and public order, with a total of 10,660 individuals, or about 13% of the prison population. After them, there are those found guilty of family and public morality offenses, numbering 7,528 (9% of inmates). 4,874 (6%) were convicted of various other crimes.
As for female inmates, the report points out that they represent 2.47% of Morocco’s prison population with about 2,058 prisoners, compared to 81,783 male inmates (97.53%).
