Morocco’s Olive Oil Harvest Surges as Imports Plunge 92%
Morocco’s purchases of foreign olive oil collapsed in the first half of 2026. This spectacular drop coincides with the return of a record national harvest, driven by improved climate conditions and water resources.
Between January and June 2026, Morocco imported just 57 million dirhams’ worth of crude or refined olive oil, compared with 716 million dirhams during the same period in 2025. The value of these purchases therefore fell by 92%, a decrease of 659 million dirhams.

This decline is one of the most significant developments recorded in the latest indicators published by the Exchange Office. It contrasts with the overall rise in Moroccan imports, which increased by 15.3% to reach 458.8 billion dirhams in the first half of the year.
However, the decrease does not reflect a sudden lack of interest among Moroccans in olive oil. It is largely explained by the spectacular recovery in domestic production after several seasons affected by drought.
Morocco’s olive harvest reached a record level of two million tonnes during the 2025-2026 agricultural campaign, marking an increase of 111% compared with the previous campaign. The Ministry of Agriculture links this improvement to more favorable climatic conditions and the significant replenishment of water resources.
Two million tonnes change everything
Rainfall affected all regions of the kingdom, and the annual average reached 520 millimeters, 54% above the average of the past thirty years. Dam levels simultaneously reached 75%, bringing water back to crops and olive groves after years of water stress.
With more olives available at Moroccan farms and oil mills, relying on foreign suppliers has become far less necessary. The comparison between the 111% increase in the harvest and the 92% drop in import value shows that local supply has regained a central position in the market.

The Exchange Office’s figures nevertheless concern the value of goods declared at customs, not their exact volume. They nonetheless reveal a major shift: thanks to the return of rainfall and an exceptional harvest, Morocco now depends far less on imported olive oil.
