Morocco: Smile, You’re Being Scanned
Tanger police have just deployed two vehicles capable of automatically reading license plates and checking the information collected during their patrols in real time.
Dubbed “Aman” and “Madar,” these new smart cars have begun circulating in the streets of Tanger as part of the General Directorate of National Security (DGSN)’s technological modernization program.

The system installed in “Aman” uses several cameras providing 360-degree vision. They are connected to an automatic license-plate-reading application. As the vehicle drives, the information can therefore be checked and cross-referenced with the systems available to police services.
The car is also equipped with real-time facial-recognition technology and relies on artificial-intelligence models to analyze the images collected during patrols.
Six lanes monitored at the same time
“Madar,” for its part, operates as a mobile surveillance platform. Its high-definition cameras can simultaneously monitor traffic on six lanes, notably to reduce blind spots and facilitate the identification of vehicles.
The two patrol vehicles are directly connected to the command and coordination rooms as well as to the units deployed in the field. They also have a geolocation system and a terminal providing access to the databases used by police.

The technology was developed by the DGSN’s technical and engineering teams. After being deployed first in Rabat and then in Casablanca in July, its rollout has now reached Tanger. National Security plans to gradually extend the use of these vehicles to Morocco’s main cities.
