Muslim Woman Denied Entry to French Restaurant Over Headscarf, Sparks Discrimination Complaint
Invited to lunch by her son on Sunday, May 29, Mother’s Day, a woman was denied access to a restaurant located in Hendaye, a commune in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques, because she was veiled. A complaint for discrimination has been filed at the Pau police station.
The son of the refused customer filmed the scene and posted a video on social media. He explains that he had booked a week in advance in this restaurant in the Basque Country. Justifying her act, the manager of the establishment explains that she did not want a customer "dressed like in prehistoric times". "If you have the right to that (wearing a pendant in the shape of a crucifix), why doesn’t she have the right [to the headscarf tied around her head]," the son of the customer questions.
In a statement to Sud-Ouest, the restaurant manager said she did not accept "anything that can be likened to a tool of submission of women". This angered the son of the refused customer. The latter filed a complaint for discrimination at the Pau police station.
