The North of Morocco prepares its major transformation
Several cities in northern Morocco want to equip themselves with new urban development master plans, in order to anticipate future socio-economic developments, especially since this region is promised a bright economic future. In this sense, they have launched studies.
The north of Morocco will soon be transformed thanks to the various urban development master plans launched or in the process of being launched. The major cities like Tangier or Tetouan, as well as those of smaller size like Fnideq, are affected by these various master plans. The cities of Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima are thus anticipating their future evolution. Over time, this northern region has become the second economic hub of the kingdom, thanks to the construction of world-class infrastructure, such as the Tanger Med Port.
Recently, the Ministry of National Land Use Planning, in collaboration with the Urban Agency of Tangier, has launched a tender worth 5 billion dirhams for the development of a new urban development master plan (SDAU) for the prefecture of Tangier-Assilah and the province of Fahs-Anjra. The ambition is to provide Greater Tangier with a sustainable and balanced vision for the future, in response to the multiple urban, economic and environmental challenges facing this region in full transformation, according to the website Les Inspirations Éco. The city of the Strait is thus embarking on its transformation in order to host the Africa Cup of Nations (CAN 2025) and the 2025 World Cup.
Moreover, a study is planned to optimize the city’s renovation of the Grand Stadium after the international competitions. A rail link project between the stadium, the Al Boraq station and the Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport will also be implemented.
Fnideq-Tetouan has not been forgotten. An international call for tenders has been launched by the Urban Agency of Tetouan for the development of the Urban Development Master Plan (SDAU) of the coastline. The provinces of Tetouan and the prefecture of M’diq-Fnideq are concerned by this master plan, covering an area of 1,080 km² spread over 17 territorial municipalities, with an estimated population of nearly 800,000 inhabitants. The aim is to reconcile urban growth, environmental sustainability and economic attractiveness.
Another ambition: to define the main guidelines for land use planning, taking into account the challenges related to urban expansion, the balance between urban and rural areas, as well as economic attractiveness, environmental protection and the resilience of these territories to natural risks.
