Report: Over Half of Married Moroccan Women Face Domestic Violence
Despite awareness campaigns, domestic violence is a daily reality for many Moroccan women. A report on human rights delivered by the Democratic League of Women’s Rights Federation and the Injad network against gender-based violence, revealed that more than half of married Moroccan women have been subjected to all kinds of violence.
About 5.3 million women aged between 15 and 74 have been victims of violence from a spouse, ex-husband, or fiancé. The two associations that delivered this report, followed 8,012 women victims of violence received during the period between January 2019 and June 2021. It emerges that 52% of the victims are young women aged between 15 and 24, 54% have an average level of education, and those who are unemployed represent 56%.
According to the same source, in 7 out of 10 cases of domestic violence, 69% concern psychological violence, 12% economic violence, 11% physical violence and 8% sexual violence. As for those who exercise these forms of violence, the report indicates that 1% are under 18 years old, 15% in the 18-28 age group, and 25% for 29-48 years old. Men aged between 49 and 59 are 18%. For those over 60, the percentage is estimated at 6%.
