A Suspension Threat Hangs Over Royal Air Maroc
Royal Air Maroc could be temporarily barred from operating in Nigeria. The aviation regulator accuses the Moroccan airline of repeated violations of passengers’ rights, particularly in its handling of delayed baggage and complaints.
The threat was issued by Michael Achimugu, director of public affairs and consumer protection at the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority. He claims that previous sanctions have not led Royal Air Maroc to improve its practices sufficiently.

According to him, the airline allegedly informs travelers late about the delayed arrival of their baggage, does not systematically provide them with the assistance to which they are entitled, and allows complaints to drag on until the regulator intervenes.

The official also accuses Royal Air Maroc’s director in Nigeria, Ahmed Boussouf, of failing to attend meetings organized in Abuja. The airline allegedly sends a representative who does not have the necessary authority to resolve cases or make commitments.
Michael Achimugu claims that a confrontation took place on Thursday. Ahmed Boussouf allegedly replied: “Do whatever you want.” This version was reported by Punch and Royal Air Maroc had not yet publicly responded to it.
The department responsible for consumer protection now intends to recommend suspending the airline’s operations until it commits to complying with Nigerian regulations and improving its treatment of passengers.

Royal Air Maroc had already been sanctioned in December 2024, along with four Nigerian airlines, for violations of consumer protection rules. It paid the corresponding fine in September 2025. This time, the regulator promises more severe penalties.
