Royal Visit: Tétouan and the North Get a Makeover to Welcome Mohammed VI
The cities of Tétouan, M’diq and Fnideq are experiencing an acceleration of their urban construction projects. These vast development works anticipate the summer season and the long-awaited arrival of King Mohammed VI to celebrate Eid al-Adha.
As in previous years, the sovereign is preparing to spend his summer vacation in the north of the country. This royal presence is accompanied by significant logistical preparations, marked by the comings and goings of vehicles attached to the Palace. Mohammed VI is expected to perform the prayer and sacrifice of Eid at the Hassan II Mosque in Tétouan for the fifth time, following the editions of 2019, 2023, 2024 and 2025. The Royal Palace will also host the celebrations of Throne Day, the allegiance ceremony and the swearing-in of new officers. During these stays, the king has a habit of driving his car, without escort, through the streets of the region.

To prepare for this royal agenda and the high tourist season, local authorities are multiplying beautification works. In the heart of Tétouan, the famous Moulay El Mehdi square is undergoing complete rehabilitation, while the pedestrian Mohammed V avenue, the historic axis leading to the Palace, is being renovated while preserving its architecture inherited from the Spanish protectorate. Traffic flow is also a priority with the widening of April 9 Avenue. This vital peripheral road, serving coastal cities up to Ceuta, is expanding to six lanes and includes new sidewalks dedicated to pedestrians along the Martil wadi.

This transformation extends to strategic infrastructure to absorb the massive influx of visitors. Saniat Rmel International Airport is equipped with a new terminal building meeting world standards to increase its connections. According to observations on the ground reported by Al3omk, the green belt road project is progressing to offer a second road entrance to the city and relieve traffic congestion. Finally, the development of the natural site of Ain Zarka, particularly popular in summer for its mountain pools, completes this vast plan to upgrade the province.
