The United States has extended until this Monday the confidential talks held in Madrid between Morocco, Algeria , Mauritania and the Polisario Front. Washington is increasing the pressure to obtain a framework agreement on the Sahara within three months.
The Polisario Front rejects any attempt at negotiations with Morocco since the adoption of Resolution 2797 of the United Nations Security Council validating the Moroccan autonomy plan for the Sahara as the sole basis for resolving the conflict.

Nasser Bourita, the Moroccan Minister of Foreign Affairs, stated that Morocco’s diplomatic victory on the Sahara issue was achieved thanks to the leadership of King Mohammed VI who conducted "several direct contacts" before the vote on the Security Council resolution, which allowed "to tip the balance in favor of Morocco".
The Polisario says it is ready to accept the autonomy plan proposed in 2007 by Morocco for the Sahara, and already supported by many countries such as the United States, France, Germany and Spain. However, it poses a condition.
Until now neutral, Russia is preparing to follow in the footsteps of countries like the United States, Israel, Spain and France, which have recognized Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara and support its autonomy plan.
In Portugal, a political party is pushing its country to recognize Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara. So far, Lisbon has adopted a neutral position.
