In seven months, the United States sold five times more to Morocco than to Algeria

Data published by the U.S. Census Bureau make it possible to precisely compare U.S. trade with the two countries over the same period. They concern merchandise trade only and are expressed in nominal value, without seasonal adjustment.

From January to July, U.S. exports to Morocco reached $4.069 billion, compared with $3.249 billion one year earlier. They thus increased by 25.2%.

Over the same period, U.S. sales to Algeria totaled just $804.4 million. They nevertheless rose by 32.5% year-on-year, but remained five times lower than those destined for the Moroccan market.

In July alone, the gap widened further: the United States sold $686.3 million worth of goods to Morocco, compared with $116.3 million to Algeria, or nearly six times more.

Surplus with Morocco, deficit with Algeria

The difference concerns more than just U.S. exports. The overall structure of trade is also reversed. During the first seven months of the year, the United States imported $1.236 billion worth of Moroccan goods. Its trade surplus with the kingdom therefore reached $2.833 billion.

With Algeria, Washington instead bought more than it sold. U.S. imports of Algerian products amounted to $1.726 billion, leaving the United States with a trade deficit of $921.5 million.

This imbalance is explained in particular by the weight of hydrocarbons in Algerian sales to the United States. Algeria therefore exports more goods to the U.S. market than Morocco does, but it purchases far fewer U.S. products.

Overall, merchandise trade between the United States and Morocco amounted to $5.305 billion in seven months, compared with $2.530 billion with Algeria. U.S. trade with the kingdom is therefore twice as large, while U.S. exports alone are five times higher there.
