Sipri 2026: Morocco dethrones Algeria and becomes the largest arms importer in Africa
The Kingdom has increased its arms acquisitions by 12% between 2021 and 2025, according to Sipri. Driven by its partnerships with Washington and Tel Aviv, the country is now ranked 28th among the world’s largest importers of military systems.
The Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri) indicates that Morocco now accounts for 1% of global imports of major arms. This progress places the country among the most dynamic buyers on the African continent for the modernization of its defense capabilities.
The United States consolidates its position as the leading supplier with 60% of deliveries, followed by Israel (24%) and France (10%). These acquisitions are mainly focused on fighter jets, defense systems and advanced technological equipment.
The rise of military technologies and surveillance systems marks the evolution of the Kingdom’s strategic partnerships. Washington remains the central pillar of this structure, while security cooperation with Israel continues to develop significantly.
Several orders remain pending for delivery in the coming years. Major contracts are still ongoing with international partners, particularly the United States and Spain, for the supply of armored vehicles and air defense systems.
