Spain Drowning Tragedy: Mother and Children Die in Rescue Attempt

A family tragedy occurred on Wednesday, July 15 in the río Esca reservoir at Roncal in northern Spain. A 29-year-old mother (Fatima Elmiry) and two of her four children, aged 7 and 11, lost their lives in the water.

The victims had been living in this Pyrenees commune for more than three years. The alert was raised around 4:30 p.m. by a woman who discovered the situation.

The first police officers to arrive at the scene pulled the mother from the water before locating the two boys. Medical teams and firefighters attempted to resuscitate them for several minutes, but were unable to save them.

According to Diario de Navarra, the Guardia Civil is currently favoring the theory of a chain accident. One person apparently found themselves in difficulty, prompting the other two to enter the water to help them.

Deceptive Depth

The river level was low following several weeks of minimal rainfall. However, the area contains pits with varying depths. At the site of the tragedy, the water reached approximately three meters.

The reservoir is normally frequented by residents and visitors for swimming. Emergency services mobilized firefighters, several ambulances, a medical helicopter, regional police and the Guardia Civil.

The victims’ relatives and village residents received assistance following the tragedy. The municipality of Roncal expressed its dismay and declared three days of official mourning.
