Spaniards Fear Morocco
A survey has just revealed that Spanish citizens are increasingly concerned about Russia and Morocco from a military standpoint. At the same time, a majority wishes for a rapprochement with the United States.
According to the survey relayed by the daily El Español, 68% of respondents consider Vladimir Putin’s Russia as a serious military threat. This concern follows four years of conflict in Ukraine.

Morocco also causes apprehension for 57.6% of the Spanish population, due to its sovereignty claims over the enclaves of Ceuta and Melilla. This sentiment is shared by voters of the Popular Party (PP) at 97.3%, Vox at 92.2% and the Socialist Party (PSOE) at 52%. More than 60% of those surveyed believe that Spain should move away diplomatically from its southern neighbor.
The study conducted by SocioMétrica highlights the divergences of opinion on the foreign policy pursued by Pedro Sánchez. The head of government has made multiple gestures toward Morocco since 2018 and has broken with historical allies such as the United States and Israel. Nevertheless, a large portion of the population (61.7%) wishes instead to draw closer to the United States. This figure rises to 87.4% among PP sympathizers and 85.8% for Vox.

Regarding other world powers, opinions diverge according to political sensibilities. Israel is seen as a threat by 52% of Spaniards, a figure driven up by voters of Sumar, Podemos and the PSOE. Iran, despite recent international events, is considered a military danger by only 34.2% of respondents, although nearly 80% wish to distance themselves from the regime. Finally, China represents a threat for only 21.9% of the population.
