Spanish Restaurant Chain Faces Racism Allegations After Employee Refuses to Serve Moroccan Customers
Three young people of Moroccan origin were victims of racist behavior from an employee of the Pans & Company chain. The events took place in Girona, in northern Spain.
Outraged by this reception, the young Moroccans entered into a discussion with the employee who simply told them: "there are many people we don’t accept. I won’t serve you your coffee because the boss doesn’t want to."
According to the Spanish newspaper El Pais, the employee claimed that her boss had spotted the 3 men through the surveillance cameras, before ordering his staff not to serve them.
While announcing the opening of an internal investigation, the Pans & Company company also denied any discriminatory treatment of customers due to their origin, adds the Spanish newspaper.
For the Catalan Councilor for Labor, Social Affairs and Family, Chakir El Homrani, a Spaniard of Moroccan origin, the incident is "intolerable", in the sense that "not serving a customer because of his origin is called racism".
