Syrian Refugees Dominate Morocco's Asylum Seeker Population, Survey Finds
More than one refugee out of two, or 54.4%, is of Syrian origin, according to the High Commission for Planning (HCP) which conducted a survey on forced migration in Morocco in the first quarter.
According to the document, the Syrians are in the lead, ahead of the Yemenis who represent 12.3% of the total, the Central Africans (9.9%) and the Ivorians (4.5%), reveals the HCP, which specifies that the survey covered a sample of 3,000 migrants divided into 2,200 regularized or irregular migrants and 800 refugees or asylum seekers.
Of all the regularized or irregular migrants, 16.7% are from Côte d’Ivoire, 15.9% from Senegal, 13.2% from Guinea, 10.1% from the Democratic Republic of Congo, 8.7% from Cameroon, 4.9% from Mali, 2.3% from the Central African Republic and 15.1% from other African countries, the survey also points out.
According to the data collected, the majority of migrants (84.9%) left their countries of origin from 2010 onwards (82% among men and 89.3% among women) compared to 15.1% before 2010.
