Tanger Med Outpaces Valencia Algeciras Maritime Ranking 2026
The Moroccan port complex Tanger Med strengthens its lead on the international maritime scene. In the second quarter of 2026, it outpaces its direct Spanish competitors once more, Valencia and Algeciras, in the prestigious UNCTAD ranking.
According to data from the Port Liner Shipping Connectivity Index (PLSCI), Tanger Med displays a score of 575.79 points in the second quarter, securing 26th place in the global ranking. The Moroccan hub thus considerably increases its lead over the port of Valencia, which fell to 566.32 points (27th place). While the gap was only 1.32 points in the previous quarter, it now approaches 9.5 points. Meanwhile, Algeciras struggles to keep pace and ranks 35th globally with 519.21 points.

Valencia’s underperformance is explained by a severe drop of 9.4%, marking the largest decline among major European infrastructures. Conversely, Tanger Med maintains remarkable stability. As for Algeciras, although it records a slight increase of 1.2% compared to the first quarter, it sees the German Bremerhaven (529.84 points) strengthen its lead in Europe. The German port surpassed the Andalusian one at the beginning of the year and consolidates its position of strength quarter after quarter.

At the European level, the hierarchy remains frozen at the top: Rotterdam still dominates with 950.83 points, followed by Antwerp and Hamburg. Despite the slowdown of its main transshipment hubs, Spain, as a country, regains its seventh place worldwide — temporarily lost to Japan — and maintains its continental leadership ahead of the United Kingdom and the Netherlands. The dynamism of the Spanish fleet relies notably on the rapid progression of secondary ports such as Bilbao (+50.2%), Las Palmas, Gijón or Huelva, as Estrecho Digital points out. Meanwhile, Morocco, driven by the power of Tanger Med, rises to 22nd place worldwide among the best-connected countries.
