TGV, RAM, airports... Morocco is massively investing in its transport infrastructure
Abdessamad Kayouh, Minister of Transport and Logistics, presented the draft budget of his department, amounting to nearly 29 billion dirhams, to the Commission on Infrastructure, Energy, Mines, Environment and Sustainable Development at the House of Representatives on Wednesday.
This amount of 29 billion includes 1.8 billion dirhams of the ministry’s own investments and 27 billion dirhams for the sector’s public institutions and companies, said the Minister of Transport and Logistics. Regarding air transport, Abdessamad Kayouh presented an investment program of 38 billion dirhams by 2030 to strengthen the reception capacity of the main airports in the kingdom, particularly those of Rabat-Salé and Sania R’mel in Tetouan (in progress), as well as those of Casablamba, Marrakech, Agadir, Tangier and Fez, which are scheduled. The total amount of these works should reach 38 billion dirhams by 2030, he specified. At the same time, the Royal Air Maroc (RAM) fleet will increase from 60 aircraft currently to 62 before the end of 2025, and then to 71 in 2026, with the arrival of nine Boeing 737 MAX 8 and two Boeing 787 Dreamliner.
The official said that the rail network is the most important component with an investment program of 96 billion dirhams, including the extension of the high-speed line Kenitra-Marrakech over 430 km, with a connection to Fez, as well as the development of regional trains and the improvement of the existing network. The member of the government also mentioned the project to extend the high-speed line to Agadir over 240 km, which aims to reduce the journey time to only one hour, specifying that "the definition and execution studies, as well as the priority expropriation procedures, have been finalized". The project of the railway link of Essaouira via Chichaoua over 120 km is also progressing, with 60% of the preliminary studies already carried out, he assured.
The logistics sector is not left out. The ministry aims to reach 750 hectares of logistics land by 2028 in order to cover all regions of the kingdom, with 500 hectares already secured. Kayouh also added that the development of the economic and logistics activity zone of El Argoub, the road center of El Guerguerat and the logistics zone of Dakhla "will contribute to supporting trade and strengthening the positioning of these southern provinces as a promising African logistics hub".
