TUI considers reducing its aircraft in Belgium, with nine Moroccan cities served

TUI Group CEO Sebastian Ebel raised this possibility in an interview with De Tijd. He considers Belgium’s tax climate unfavorable and warns that the group could move aircraft to markets regarded as more competitive.

Morocco holds an important place in the airline’s Belgian network. TUI fly Belgium markets flights to nine cities: Agadir, Al Hoceïma, Casablanca, Marrakech, Nador, Oujda, Rabat, Tangier and Tétouan.

TUI has not, however, announced the cancellation of any of these routes. A reduction in the number of aircraft based in Belgium does not automatically mean fewer flights to Morocco: the group can reassign its aircraft or modify its schedule without abandoning a destination.

The Belgian tax will double

The tax pressure cited by TUI will nevertheless intensify. The text adopted by the Chamber of Representatives provides for increasing, from 5 to 10 euros, as of January 1, 2027, the boarding tax applicable notably to flights of more than 500 kilometers. Routes between Belgium and Morocco are therefore affected.

This threat also comes as TUI’s aviation activity is going through a less favorable period. In its third-quarter 2026 results, the group reported that its “Markets + Airline” division recorded an underlying operating loss of 16 million euros, compared with a profit of 50 million one year earlier. TUI cited, in particular, weaker demand, pressure on prices and rising fuel costs.

For now, no changes have therefore been announced for the nine Moroccan destinations. But TUI is clearly warning that it could reconsider the size of its fleet in Belgium just as the tax on departures is set to double.
