Tunisian Exports to Morocco Plummet in 2024, Bucking Regional Trend
The year 2024 proved to be complicated for trade relations between Tunisia and Morocco. Tunisian exports to the kingdom recorded a constant decline throughout the year, according to figures from the National Institute of Statistics in Tunisia.
While December marked a slight improvement with a 5.9% decline, the lowest since January, the overall trend remains downward. From the beginning of the year, exports began to decline, recording a 3.3% drop in January, then 9.5% in February.
This situation contrasts with Tunisia’s trade relations with other Arab countries. In December, exports to Algeria jumped 37.6% and those to Egypt rose 8%. Only Libya, with a 7.5% drop, shares Morocco’s difficulties.
The months of April and May were particularly difficult, with respective declines of 21.4% and 19% in exports to Morocco. Despite a slight slowdown in the decline in July (-15%), the trend was confirmed in August (-17.2%).
Between September and October, exports oscillated between -12.9% and -14.1%, before ending the year on a less negative note in December.
On the Moroccan side, the Foreign Exchange Office confirms this trend. In August 2023, imports from Tunisia decreased by 6.9% compared to 2022. At the same time, Morocco’s exports to Tunisia increased by 13%.
