UNESCO Report: One-Third of Moroccan Students Face School Harassment
In its report entitled "Beyond the Numbers: Ending Violence and Harassment in Schools", UNESCO presents the situation of prevalence and global trends in school violence. The case of Morocco is worrying.
UNESCO presents harassment in all its forms: psychological, physical, sexual and even online. According to its report, the prevalence rate of harassment cases in schools in Morocco is 32.2%, reports Aujourd’hui Le Maroc. This rate clearly explains that nearly one in three students has been a victim of harassment. This percentage is lower among girls (31.6%) than among boys (44%).
As for the prevalence of students who reported being involved in fights over the past 12 months, the rate is 39.7%. In other words, more than one in three students got into a fight with another student during the past year. But here again, the same observation is made: boys (53.1%) are more prone to fights than girls (24.6%). And the rate increases with age.
Furthermore, the percentage of 13-year-old students involved in a fight reaches 39.2%. The same source indicates that this rate is 39.9% for 14-year-old students, and 40.1% for those aged 15. As for physical assaults, the Report shows an overall rate of 24.1% in Moroccan schools. This is also higher among boys than among girls, at 28.7% versus 18.6%. Similarly, 22.2% of 13-year-old students were victims of physical assault, compared to 25.4% for 14-year-olds and 24.7% for 15-year-olds.
These various UNESCO rates prove that harassment is the daily lot of many learners in Morocco, and that the Kingdom must take the measure of the situation.
