Zineb Kharroubi on Trial: Moroccan Activist Faces Prison
Arrested upon her arrival in Morocco, human rights activist Zineb Kharroubi will stand trial on 23 February. A member of the diaspora living in France, the activist faces up to one year in prison for “incitement to commit an offense.”
Detained on 12 February at Marrakech airport, the young woman spent a night in police custody in Casablanca. She was then brought before the public prosecutor, who decided to prosecute her while she remains free pending the opening of her trial.

The prosecution is based on Article 299 of the Moroccan Penal Code. This offense carries a prison sentence ranging from three months to one year, potentially combined with a fine of up to 50,000 dirhams. At this stage, no official statement has clarified the exact facts that triggered the proceedings.
GenZ212: MRE activism faces the justice system
Zineb Kharroubi has been active from Paris within GenZ212, a movement bringing together young Moroccans mainly based abroad. Symbolically taking its name from the kingdom’s international telephone code, the collective advocates public freedoms and campaigns for youth involvement in politics.
Even though street protests have ceased since mid-December, the toll of this wave of repression is heavy: according to the Moroccan Association of Human Rights (AMDH), nearly 5,700 people have been arrested since the movement began. To date, around 2,100 young people remain imprisoned, some serving sentences of up to 15 years in prison, while hundreds of others are still awaiting trial.
