China’s giant battery plant in Morocco to have its own rail access

The Chinese group Gotion High-Tech’s major project in Morocco will not be served solely by road. A dedicated railway connection is now officially planned to link the battery plant located in the Kénitra region to the national network.

A decree adopted on 23 July 2026 specifically allocates 23 hectares, 87 ares and 58 centiares, or nearly 239,000 m², to this operation. The land concerned is located in Sidi Yahya, in the province of Sidi Slimane.

The text transfers these plots from the State’s private domain to its public domain and assigns this vast area a very specific purpose: the construction of the “railway connection to the Gotion High-Tech plant.”

The measure appears in Official Bulletin No. 7532, published on 6 August 2026.

Nearly 24 hectares solely for the railway connection

The scale of the area allocated provides a new indication of the infrastructure being prepared around the gigafactory. Nearly 24 hectares are thus reserved not for the plant itself, but for its railway connection.

This connection will notably allow the industrial complex to have an alternative to road transport for moving the substantial volumes of raw materials and finished products involved in battery manufacturing.

Gotion’s gigafactory is one of the largest Chinese industrial investments undertaken in Morocco. Built in the Kénitra region, it is expected to produce batteries intended in particular for the automotive industry and strengthen the Kingdom’s position in the new electric vehicle production chain.

With this new land-use decision, Morocco is therefore now preparing the logistics infrastructure that will accompany the plant’s ramp-up. The train will reach practically to the doors of the future Chinese battery giant.
