Europe Alarmed by Chinese Investment in Morocco's Tanger Med Port
Designed to accelerate Morocco’s industrialization, Tanger Med has largely succeeded in its mission. But the massive arrival of Chinese investors around the port and in the automotive sector is now worrying the European Union, which fears a new gateway to its market.
Since the pandemic, Chinese companies are said to have invested approximately 6 billion dollars, or 5.3 billion euros, in the Tangier and Kenitra region. They produce notably battery anodes, tires, braking systems and soon batteries for electric vehicles.

This establishment relies on an already highly developed ecosystem. Morocco manufactured one million vehicles in 2025 and the automotive sector now represents more than a third of its exports. The industry is said to have created 220,000 jobs since 2014, according to Le Monde.
Moroccan success becomes a European problem
In Brussels, the fear is that Chinese industrialists use Morocco to sell their products to Europe, directly or through cars assembled in Moroccan factories. Proximity to Spain and advantages offered in free trade zones reinforce this concern.
Companies established around Tanger Med benefit notably from customs and tax exemptions, while the port allows for rapid shipment of vehicles and components to Europe. Renault even has a direct rail link between its Tangier factory and port terminals.

The European Union is now discussing the level of local content necessary for a car produced in Morocco to be considered European. Behind this technical debate lies a much larger battle: Brussels wants to protect its industry against China, while Morocco is taking advantage of this competition to strengthen its place in global automotive manufacturing.
