Morocco 4th African Power 2026 - Algeria Slips Behind
Morocco ranks fourth among the continent’s most performing nations in 2026. A position strengthened by its recent status as Africa’s leading industrial economy, surpassing countries like South Africa, Egypt, and Algeria.
With a global score of 48.92, Morocco rises to fourth place in the 2026 ranking of the twenty most performing African countries. Recently recognized as the continent’s leading industrial economy by the African Development Bank, the country has managed to surpass South Africa in this regard, a position the latter had held for fifteen years. At the regional level, the kingdom far outperforms Egypt, sixth, Algeria, twelfth with a progression of seven places, and Tunisia, thirteenth.

These results stem from several years of massive investments in infrastructure and renewable energies. The industrialization strategy focused on automobiles and aeronautics has produced "tangible results." Meanwhile, major economic players such as Maroc Telecom, OCP, Attijariwafa Bank, and Bank of Africa are expanding their presence across the continent, directly contributing to national economic and diplomatic influence.
This ranking, published by Jeune Afrique, is based on 24 indicators covering mainly the 2022-2024 period. The methodology evaluates three criteria: governance, which represents half of the final score, influence, and innovation. On the governance component, Morocco obtains a score of 26.08, complemented by a score of 10.97 for its capacity for influence, calculated notably through its network of embassies or its tourist attractiveness.

At the continental level, South Africa retains first place with a total of 63.13, driven by its weight within the Brics and G20, despite a persistent energy crisis. Mauritius takes second position (50.69) thanks to economic diversification. The most spectacular rise is attributed to Namibia, third, which jumps twelve places thanks to its strong tax collection rate and recent hydrocarbon discoveries. Nigeria completes this top 5 with 48.17 points.
