Morocco Medjool Dates Germany Export Boom
Morocco is one of the world’s largest date importers, but its exports to Germany are exploding. The paradox rests on a simple strategy: import affordable varieties and reserve Moroccan Medjool for the high-end European market.
Between July 2025 and May 2026, Germany imported 714 tonnes of Moroccan dates worth over 4.2 million euros, according to EastFruit.

This volume is 22 times higher than the entire previous season. It also exceeds Moroccan exports to Germany over the previous five years combined by more than six times.
Two markets for two types of dates
Morocco imports large quantities of less expensive dates, particularly from Egypt, Tunisia, the United Arab Emirates and Algeria. These purchases mainly serve to meet strong domestic consumption.
For exports, the kingdom instead relies on Medjool, a premium variety often presented as the "queen of dates". Originating from Tafilalet, it had almost disappeared from Morocco in the early 20th century before developing in California and then in several other countries.
On the German market, Moroccan Medjool competes with Israeli dates in the high-end segment. Tunisia dominates more of the mid-range with Deglet Nour, while Pakistan supplies cheaper varieties.
