Morocco's Military Budget Surges to $5.4 Billion, Outpacing Regional Trends
In 2021, Morocco’s military spending increased by 3.4% to reach $5.4 billion, according to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute (Sipri).
Morocco is one of the countries that spends the most on armaments on the African continent. For last year’s account, the kingdom’s spending increased by 3.4%, reaching $5.4 billion, the report states.
At the same time, Algeria’s military spending decreased by 6.1% last year to stand at $9.1 billion.
Thus, North African military spending amounted to $19.6 billion, 1.7% less than in 2020, the report notes. Overall, military spending in Africa increased by 1.2% in 2021 to reach $39.7 billion.
On a global scale, this military spending has continued to increase, reaching a record level of $2,113 billion. The five biggest spenders in 2021 were the United States, China, India, the United Kingdom and Russia, which together accounted for 62% of global military spending.
More specifically, US military spending in 2021 amounted to $801 billion, down 1.4% from 2020. China’s spending is estimated at $293 billion, an increase of 4.7% compared to 2020.
