Morocco US Military Center 2030 Drones Innovation Tan-Tan

Morocco and the United States are further strengthening their military cooperation. The Royal Armed Forces and the U.S. Africa Command signed, on July 13, a memorandum of understanding to create in Morocco an African center for multidomain training and experimentation.

This future center, named AMTEC, is to be installed in Tan-Tan by 2030. It will be based on three pillars: a multidomain training area, a drone academy and an innovation and experimentation center, according to AFRICOM.

The objective is to prepare forces to operate in complex environments, including in the electromagnetic spectrum and in contested conditions. The project is also intended to allow faster testing of new military capabilities.

Tan-Tan at the Heart of the System

The drone academy will train operators, planners and instructors from Morocco, as well as from partner African countries. Training will focus notably on the integration of small drones in military operations, airspace coordination, intelligence, surveillance and strike capabilities.

The innovation center is to serve as a laboratory for developing, testing and evaluating low-cost solutions in the fields of counterterrorism and regional security. Partnerships with universities and industry players are also planned.

For both countries, AMTEC is to become a testing ground for emerging technologies: autonomous systems, artificial intelligence, advanced communications, wireless networks and sensors. Washington and Rabat also see it as an opportunity for their defense industries.

The African Lion 2027 exercise will serve as the first demonstration of the concept. Organized annually in Morocco, it will allow direct testing of these technologies in an operational environment, before the Tan-Tan center ramps up.
