Morocco vacation rental scams: consumer protection crisis

Vacation rentals can hold unpleasant surprises in Morocco. The Moroccan Federation of Consumer Rights says it regularly receives complaints concerning accommodation and short-term tourist rentals.

In some cases, vacationers discover upon arrival a property that does not match the listing. The condition of the property, its equipment or its location may differ from what was promised. Other customers find that their reserved rental is no longer available.

These problems affect Moroccan consumers, but also foreign tourists. Their repetition during peak seasons could damage Morocco’s image as a tourist destination.

An independent regulator demanded

The organization is calling for the creation of an independent institution responsible for monitoring the quality of tourist services. It believes that the Ministry of Tourism should not be both responsible for overseeing the sector and monitoring its professionals.

Its president, Bouazza Kherrati, considers that this separation would strengthen transparency and provide greater guarantees to both consumers and tourism operators.

The Federation had already submitted this proposal to the Ministry of Tourism and the government presidency in August 2024. However, the matter remains under discussion, with no concrete response announced at this stage.

For the organization, the repetition of the same malfunctions each summer shows the limits of the current system. An independent authority could receive complaints, intervene in disputes and verify that the accommodations and services offered truly match the listings.
