MRE Loans Surge: Better Repayment Rates in 2025

Credits granted to Moroccans residing abroad have accelerated sharply in 2025. Their outstanding balance reaches 23 billion dirhams, while their default rate is declining significantly and remains well below that of borrowers living in Morocco.

MRE Loans Surge: Better Repayment Rates in 2025

Bank debt of MREs increased by 7.9% in 2025, following a limited increase of 2.7% the previous year. These credits now represent the equivalent of 19% of the diaspora’s annual transfers.

This acceleration occurs as the total debt of Moroccan households reached 456 billion dirhams, according to the 2025 Financial Stability Report published by Bank Al-Maghrib, the AMMC and ACAPS.

Fewer defaults among MREs

Despite the increase in borrowing, MRE problem loans declined by 1.5%, to approximately two billion dirhams.

Their default rate thus fell from 7.1% to 6.5% in one year. It remains significantly lower than the 10.5% recorded among households residing in Morocco.

MREs therefore borrow more from Moroccan banks, but their repayments deteriorate less than those of residents. An important difference as defaults among all households reached 47 billion dirhams in 2025.
